...the best sword fight I have seen on stage in years
                                               The Times, Hamlet, Citizens Theatre

My primary focus is upon the safety of the cast and crew with whom I work. The process of directing safe action starts with the script and discussions with production and the director. It is always possible to greatly reduce or eliminate risks. I am on the BBC's list of 'Approved Contractors' and write risk assessments for every fight.

Risk assessments in line with HSE requirements are completed for every fight scene. Prior to submitting a risk assessment I will often discuss the fight with relevant departments and offer solutions to problems..

I've been working as a fight director/ arranger for 22 years. I have been FD on 10 feature films, 41 episodes of Taggart, 50 or more theatre shows, 33 episodes of Waterloo Road, over 265 episodes of BBC Scotland's flagship drama River City and much much more. My full resume can be seen via the link at the top of this page. I have multiple awards including the Cineworld Audience Award presented by Scottish BAFTA.

With years of experience in getting the best out of performers and having trained as an actor myself, I understand many of the problems that they face. Using tried and tested methods I work hard to instill confidence and improve quality in the action which actors are required to perform. I am happy to work with production during auditions and can suggest possibilities when casting.

I trained for 7 years under the tutelage of Professor Bert Bracewell BAF. The first 3 years of my formal fight training were at QMUC. Professor Bracewell is a founder member of what was The Society Of British Fight Directors with fight directors like Bob Anderson (Star Wars). He was also the Olympic Fencing Coach for 21 years.
