  What is a fight?
what is a fight director
Fight Direction, frequently asked questions...

According to my own glossary, a fight director is "A theatrical fight coordinator who directs stage violence within a production. He/ she coaches the dramatic presentation of a fight sequence, through consultation with the production's director".

What are the duties of a fight director?

The duties of the fight director include working with the actors to create safe fights which serve the production well.

He/ she should be available for production meetings and be present when the production moves into the performance space to make suitable alterations.

The fight director should discuss possible lighting, set, direction, costume and stage management problems with the appropriate departments.

The fight director should provide stage management and the actors with a written notation of the fight to be used when he/ she is not present. If it is a long tour, the fight director may also wish to catch up with the fights, at some point during the run, and re-rehearse sections which are untidy.

A fight is defined as a specialised performance involving two or more people using fists, implements or weapons, which requires choreography and supervision for safety. (Equity TNC agreement - Feb 1995).
